Fun games to play with 2 dogs

Think carefully about the physical and mental characteristics of your dog as you decide what games to play going forward. My border collie and I play almost all of the games below and dabble in many of the sports. I have many dog trainer friends whose training skills are even more honed than mine who do not do the same due to physical or behavioral constraints on their dogs.

It might be that your dog is easily stressed and finds tug-of-war scary. I promise. I actually have tried each of these games, so feel free to reach out to me for more information on the games or how to get started!

These games were largely created by professional trainers and aim to teach your dog impulse control or other specific skills. If you just play one or two games, try games from this category! Many are easy and just require food, so you can play them anywhere with any dog that eats.

Start with food in your closed hand. Your dog will nibble at your hand, dig, whine, and all the rest. As soon as she backs off, open your hand. If she dives back in for more, close your hand again.

This game gets progressively harder as you teach your dog to sit and wait patiently for increasingly tempting things.

The basic gist of it is easy: get your dog really excited about something wrestling, fetch, happy talk, tug and then start cueing different behaviors. The reward for complying with your cue is re-starting the game. For example, Barley loves playing tug. After a few seconds, I cue him to drop it. When he complies, I ask him for one of his tricks paw, shake, up, down, roll over, etc. When he complies with that, we start tugging again. This activity is a game changer for improving listening skills when your dog is excited.

This game is a fast-paced clicker training game where you actually mark and reward your dog for looking at other objects — like dogs, bikes, squirrels , or cars. Take treats on a walk with you. Try again next time. Look At That! Is one of my favorite games for reactive dogs , fearful dogs , or dogs that have a hard time focusing on their handlers.

I talk about it all the time! Mat training teaches your dog one simple rule: if this mat is on the ground, your job is to lie down on it. Following Dr. If the day protocol sounds daunting, just try the first few.

This keeps him out of the kitchen, feeds him his dinner, and keeps his mat training skills sharp! I love playing tug. There are some rules and guidelines to follow to ensure that the game stays fun and safe for everyone, but generally tug of war is a great way to bond with your dog! Barley loves playing fetch more than almost anything in the world. Playing fetch with good boundaries in place can be oh-so-fun! Think of a giant fishing pole with a squeaky toy on the end.

Growing up, I spent hours rolling in the dirt with my old lab. We both learned a lot about how to control our strength and play safely. It was a blast! Barley, my current dog, hates rough housing. There are other dogs who might get over-aroused and become dangerous when rough housed with.

I love combining chasing games with hide-and-seek games , where the dog sniffs around to find me and then I take off running. Be careful with dogs that get over-excited around fast movement. Spirit loves to play hide and seek. When he finds me he gets a nice treat. I love watching him look in all the spots I hide in and then he stands and listens for me. My dog loves tug of war…but he thinks whatever he grabs and I try to take it.. My puppies love to play tug-of-war and hide and go seek!

Its hilarious when they win. Great ideas. We place a piece of beef jerky on a remote controlled car and let our GSD chase it around.

He loves this game and we have a good laugh watching him try to get ahold of it. I make little crackers and hide them in a large comforter that is bundled up on the floor. We use a bowl on the kitchen floor. I place treats underneath it as he watches, then give him the command to turn the bowl over and get his treat. This is a way to maintain and develop their strengths, and improve your relationships with one another. Thank you so much for sharing this blog to us.

My go to: Puppy Tag. Then you take turns whistling for your dog. The dog gets exercise running back and forth, but also learns to come when you call them, because they get a treat when they do! Great to train young pups, and burn energy for all ages!

Great games! My dog goes crazy over games and everything interactive with us. One of his all-time favorites though is running with a ball outside. He goes crazy. He also loves catching bubbles! I used to be looking for this certain info for a long time. Thanks and good luck. My puppy is very young. Just an FYI. Young puppies are too small to play tug of war or to play in an agility course. The human players form a circle and stand about an arms-length or so apart from each other.

Repeat the steps until everyone has had a turn or your dog tires of play. Do you remember challenging one of your siblings or friends to see who can go the longest without blinking? This is not that game. As soon as your dog looks at the treat and therefore, toward your eyes , give your dog the treat. As you continue playing this game, your dog will learn the visual and verbal cue. According to a study published on ScienceMag. The following dog games are classics that you can play with your dog.

For example, you can use couch pillows for your dog to jump over or a chair for your dog to crawl under.

Playing frisbee is great exercise for dogs and offers them a way to practice their natural drive to chase. There are a variety of frisbees, in all different types of materials, to choose from. I would not recommend plastic or hard frisbees as they could hurt your dog. Chloe loves the Kong flyer in the photo above and the Chuck-it! They are both flexible and soft, yet strong and durable. If your dog has played fetch, then frisbee is an extension of the same concept.

If your pup is new to frisbee, make sure that you start by letting your dog sniff and get excited over the frisbee. You can even roll it on the ground first. Then start by throwing it just a short distance. This will help your dog be successful. Also, give plenty of verbal praise i. At our home, we have four classic red Kong toys that we keep in the freezer and two food-dispensing dog puzzles. They are all useful not only for entertainment, but also for mental stimulation!
